Hats off to the English Department at WMHS for the successful poetry reading competition. There was great participation and some very, very talented kids involved. |
Eight WMHS wrestlers gained bids to the regional wrestling championship. Not bad for a second year program. Congrats also to Mike Sizemore for earning Jefferson District "Coach of the Year" honors. |
Cameron Green of WMMS was awarded the Pop Warner Mid-South Regional First Team Scholar. This award is based on academic excellence for not only his performance in the classroom, but also for extra-curricular activities and involvement that he has shown in the community. The philosophy of Pop Warner is “Academics and athletics go hand and hand.” The goal of Pop Warner are to develop well-rounded young men who learn not only the fundamentals of football, but also the importance of education, in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound minds, bodies, and characters- and having a good time along the way. Cameron will be honored at the Fifth Annual Mid-South Scholar Tribute, along with 15 other First Team student athletes from the Central Virginia area, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in April 5, 2009. |
Your technology department is brilliant and I love the new clip-art. THRILLED about this feature! |
We were pleased to have had Congressman Tom Perriello visit last week. The Congressman was able to see first hand the many outstanding projects he has been working to preserve. He took time out of his busy schedule to talk with some students and even teach a bit. The Primary School was thrilled to have him come. |
Message from Asst. AD at Dominion High School:
Katie, My name is Kevin Shea. I am the Assistant Athletic Director at Dominion HS. I wanted to touch base with you on two items regarding last nights game. First and most importantly, you had a player that went down during the game and was taken to our local hospital by his parents on the advice of our trainer. He was to be checked out due to an apparent concussion. I wanted to make sure he is doing well and to let you know that we are all thinking about him. Secondly, I wanted to let you know that it was a terrific game, played well and hard by both teams. And although your team did not come out on top, each and every member of your team showed the heart of a true competitor and the sportsmanship of a winner. You, your school and your community should be, as I'm sure you are, very proud of them. Congratulations on an outstanding season. Best Regards, Kevin Shea Asst. Athletic Director Dominion High School |
Congratulations to Brittany Taylor

On 3/30/09, all nursing staff attended a course at NGES in blood pressure monitoring offered through the Va. Dept. of Health. Grant funding was provided by the American Heart Association so that nursing staff could participate in a course that normally costs $800 per student. All nursing staff became certified Blood Pressure Measurement Specialists. This was a wonderful learning opportunity for nursing staff!! Several Albemarle County nurses also attended this class and all had a productive day of learning to provide the best care possible to our students!
The following staff are now certified Blood Pressure Measurement Specialists: Toni Allen, Lpn-RES Cindy Knight, RN-GCPS Charlotte Harlow, Lpn-WMMS Nancy Dews, Lpn-WMHS Kelly Shifflett, RN-NGES Denise Shifflett-NGES Kelly Shifflett, RN and Nancy Dews, Lpn also attended an additional 'train the trainer' session enabling them to become certified Blood Pressure Measurement Specialist Trainers. Thank you so much!! |
NGES would like to thank our student Michelle Deisbeck for volunteering her time over spring break to renew our school planters with flowers she selected, provided, and planted. Her brother, Michael, helped his sister with the project. The results are quite beautiful. |
I want to wish all the nurses in the Greene County School system a "Happy Nurses Week"! Nurses week is May 6th through the 12th. Thank you for taking care of our sons and daughters. I hope each of you have a wonderful week full of surprises and smiles! |
A big thank you to all of Megan Flansburg's teachers past and present. She has been selected as 1 of 160 students statewide to attend the Summer Residential Governor's School for Mathematics, Science and Technology. She's very proud to represent our schools at Lynchburg College this summer. Thank you for all of your hard work these past 11 years. |

Nursing staff and Physical Education staff recently became nationally certified to perform Vision Screenings by attending a class offered by Prevent Blindness Mid-Atlantic on 8/20/09. This training was funded by a grant offered by The Lions of Virginia Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation. Each building received a Screening Kit which included valuable resource materials, including new vision charts and vouchers for children in need of eye glass assistance. |
Rising Tide Award WinnerThis weeks recipient is Linda Thompson from Ruckersville Elementary.
The nomination form stated the following: "I would like to nominate Linda Thompson for her willingness to completely change strides at the beginning of the school year. With less than one week before the start of school Linda willingly changed from extension to first grade teacher to accommodate the larger-than-expected enrollment at RES. Her presence as the "temporary" first grade teacher led many parents to feel reassurance where they had felt anxiety." Thank you, Linda, for your unselfish spirit and willingness to help out during a difficult situation. |
This summer, with the help of the PTO, school board, and the Stanardville community, the GCPS gymnasium received a facelift. We have new floors, airconditioning, and a fresh coat of paint. We are so greatful for all the community support. It is truly amazing what we can accomplish when we work together. |
Representing William Monroe Middle School, Ryan Thomas placed first in the middle school division of the Fork Union Invitational with a time of 8:57.14 for a hilly 2.5 kilometer course (97 runners). Congratulations Ryan! |
From Melissa Liberatore, WMMS parent:
Dear Mr. Pursel, I wanted to write to extend my thanks to some particular WMMS Staff members. Last week my son Matthew was injured during his PE class while playing flag football. Ms. Sullivan (his PE teacher) realized the possible severity of his injury and immediately went to action to ensure that he received immediate care and kept immobilized. She sat with him on the field and provided a sense of calm by talking with him and trying to keep his mind off the pain he was experiencing. The other PE teachers were wonderful and took over the remainder of her class so she could remain with Matt on the field. Ms. Harlow, the school nurse, was called and immediately arrived on the field prepared to take care of Matt. At this point they were not certain if he had a broken bone in his foot or leg and acted upon a worse case scenario. Ms. Harlow, according to the ER doctor that we later saw, did exactly everything correct to prevent further damage to Matt's ankle injury. She provide a splint, she knew to keep his shoe on his foot to prevent extensive swelling and allow stability, provided ice and had the wheelchair brought out. She contacted me immediately so I could drive to the school and get him to the emergency room in a short amount of time. Ms. Sullivan remained with Matt this whole time and Mr. Roach was kind and gentle while maneuvering the wheelchair over the field to get Matt onto a solid surface. The whole PE teacher team worked together to keep the other students calm and engaged while wonderful care was given to my son. Ms. Harlow asked me to call her and tell her the results and has shown such care and concern for my son that I'm touched beyond words for her sensitive and loving spirit. It was determined at the ER and follow-ups that Matt has severely torn ligaments around his ankle and will need quite some time to heal these injuries. Ms. Harlow has continued to be very sensitive to his needs while he is now on crutches. She has been wonderful with ensuring we have provided what he needs during the school day to make him as comfortable as possible during this first week until he can get into a good rhythm while attending school in a cast and with crutches. There may have been others involved in Matt's care and if so my thanks go out to them also but I truly needed to recognize Ms. Harlow and Ms. Sullivan for their wise methods in providing the care needed immediately to prevent further damage to Matt's ankle until he could be seen at the hospital. It is teachers and staff members like Ms. Harlow and Ms. Sullivan that make my husband and I confident entrusting the care of our son to WMMS during the school year. With sincerest gratitude, Melissa & Rob Liberatore |
Kudos to the WMHS Marching Band for the excellent performance during the Blue Ridge/ChristChurch football game on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon at BRS. They played the National Anthem, and then stayed for the entire game playing music throughout to add to the crowd enthusiasm. It is great to see partnerships like this between WMHS and BRS. |
We have a lot of bright smiles at Greene County Public Schools! Over 200 students participated in the Smile Virginia Moblie Dental Program that the school district offered during the month of October!! Many thanks to nursing staff, adminstrators, volunteers, and teachers for making this a successful experience! We are currently working on setting up schedules for next year and hope to offer the program in the fall and spring. |
