Parent & Family Involvement

SchoolCenter Picture Getting Your Child Engaged

Research has consistently shown that when families are engaged with their child's education, the child has increased higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and a higher likelihood of graduating high school.

We are here to share the responsibility of helping you to become engaged in your child's educational success.  To get started, here are some ideas on how you, as a busy parent, can make the most of your time with your child:

  • Plan to eat certain meals together as a family.
  • Make weekly dates with your child when you will give them undivided attention.
  • Praise your child often and acknowledge their gifts.
  • Give your child responsibilities, such as being responsible for their school belongings.
  • Help your child learn from their problems.  Teach your child to focus on what can be learned from experiences that do not work out as planned.

While these ideas are simple, they have proven to increase a child's self-esteem and a sense of being accepted.

Ways To be Involved At your Child's School

In addition to providing a safe haven at home for child, another critical element of parental success involves being committed to knowing what happens each day at school:

  • Introduce yourself to the principal at the first opportunity rather than waiting for a problem to occur.
  • Make sure your child knows who their school counselors are and stay in touch with them throughout the school year.
  • Ask your school administrators how you can get access to the school's policies and curriculum.
  • Stay informed about parent-teacher conferences and other meetings that may be scheduled during the year.
